Hennessy perhaps more important to McCoy than personality award

Tony McCoy may be more concerned about which horse he will ride in some of the big upcoming races such as the Hennessy Gold Cup, but support is growing to help crown the jockey the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

A number of MPs have signed an Early Day Motion, which indicates the reasons why the 15-time champion jumps jockey is a worthy winner of the accolade.

Their reasonings include the fact that McCoy is the only jockey to have ridden over 3,000 career winners and the wider contribution he has made to horse racing.

It is additionally noted that the fact that McCoy won the Grand National for the first time this year on Don’t Push It at the 15th attempt only enhanced his credentials further.

McCoy is the 1/1 favourite to be named 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, with his only serious contender looking like being golfer Graeme McDowell.

However, McCoy has a number of big races to look forward to before attending the awards ceremony, including a trip to Newbury for the Hennessy Gold Cup.

It is currently unknown which horse he will ride in the race, but there will be a couple of trainers looking to appoint McCoy for their leading contenders.

The fact that McCoy celebrated his first Grand National win this year could be a good omen as the 36-year-old is still without a victory in the Newbury race.

McCoy appears to have missed out on the ride on Newbury Hennessy horse racing odds favourite Denman to Sam Thomas, who is the 4/1 favourite and goes for a third triumph in the race.

Perhaps the most likely mount for McCoy is on 8/1 chance Burton Port, who he has ridden on four occasions in the past without finishing outside of the first three.

Otherwise, he could take a spin on Nicky Henderson’s other runner Barbers Shop, who can be backed at 25/1. See the full Newbury Hennessy horse racing betting odds market.
