Only one British or Irish horse in the eight-year history of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf has ever taken the laurels, with six winners bred and trained on US soil, but you wouldn’t guess as much from the market for this year’s renewal.
Six are priced up between 5/1 and 7/1, yet only John Oxley’s La Coronel – the outsider of the sextet having won twice on the bounce since finishing fifth on debut – hails from home shores.
Aidan O’Brien swarms all over this event, with Roly Poly (5/1), Hydrangea and Promise To Be True (both 6/1) suggesting the Ballydoyle master’s usual mob-handed tactics will cross the Atlantic.
French trainer Mikel Delzangles saddled Flotilla to victory with Christophe Lemaire on board four years ago, and Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte’s Spain Burg will fly the tricolour this year.
Under Frankie Dettori, Spain Burg (5/1) pulled off a 14/1 win over Roger Charlton’s odds-on jolly Fair Eva in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket late last month, having won three times and finished runner-up the other in four previous starts during her two-year-old campaign.
Tipped up by this website at 16/1 to win next year’s 1000 Guineas, Intricately is the highest profile of the horses handled by O’Brien’s son Joseph, the two-time Epsom Derby-winning jockey granted a training licence during the summer.
After beating Hydrangea by a head at the Curragh last time out, with 1/1 jolly Promise To Be True 4l further back, O’Brien junior’s first stablestar is 5/1 co-favourite, but a Breeders’ Cup success seems a stretch from a trainer just four months into his new career, however well connected.
There’s a lot to like about Spain Burg, particularly globe-hopping rider Dettori’s potential presence in the saddle.
