ITV Racing Tips: Apprentice claim to make the difference to Great Ambassador

Glorious Goodwood Racing

Glorious Goodwood comes to an end with the annual cavalry charge of the Stewards Cup as its feature.

The curtain drops on five days of summer action over the scenic Sussex Downs when six of the races will be shown live on terrestrial television.

As the Stewards Cup is worth £250,000, it is one of the richest handicaps of the season and a highly competitive one with a maximum field of 28.

Northern stables have won the last two editions and the Yorkshire-based Mr Wagyu has been made favourite to land the 6f dash.

The support races include the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes and Summer Handicap while there is also room for two races from Newmarket including the Listed Chalice Stakes.

There will be eight races in total shown by ITV from 12:55. We have previewed the three most significant races of the day in our ITV Racing Tips.

14:10 Summer Handicap

The Mark & Charlie Johnston stable has won four of the last seven runnings of this race. They have declared three runners, of which the hat-trick seeking Soapy Stevens is the most fancied.

The John & Thady Gosden-trained Trawlerman has his backers, but this could be an opportunity for one of the local stables.

Cemhaan, trained by George Baker, has been getting better with age, winning handicaps at Salisbury and Newmarket this year, but he got no run at Royal Ascot and has a chance to bounce back under Hollie Doyle.

14:45 Lillie Langtry Stakes

Favourite Sea La Rosa finished second in the Lancashire Oaks last time and before that beat Viola in a Group 3 at Haydock.

Viola could probably have given the winner more of a race that day as she was set plenty to do and didn’t get the smoothest passage when she did mount her challenge.

They step up another two furlongs for this contest and at likely double-digit odds represents the best value.

15:20 Stewards’ Cup

A seriously challenging race to crack with 18lb between the top weight Chil Chil and Zargun at the bottom.

Chil Chil has had just one start since finishing third in the Haydock Sprint Cup and is bound to come on for his recent outing at Newbury.

Mr Wagyu shouldered top weight to victory in the Scurry Handicap at the Curragh last time and now carries a 6lb penalty, while Inver Park goes for a four-timer for the rising trainer George Boughey.

Great Ambassador has also had a quiet season so far and deserves a change of luck in these big handicaps. He finished third in the race last year when he was first home of his far side group and was on the wrong side of the track again when second in the Ayr Gold Cup.

He ran a decent race to finish a place in front of Chil Chil last time and while he is still high in the handicap, Saffie Osborne’s 3lb allowance could be a significant benefit.
