England Euro 2024 squad: The 7 players expected to be cut
Published:
Gareth Southgate announced his 33-man Euro 2024 England camp last week, and with seven men to be cut before the tournament, Ladbrokes looks at the likely 26-man squad.
Before fans can even think about the 2024/25 Premier League season, all attention is on International football, with anticipation building for who Southgate is going to pick in his 26-man squad as the Three Lions look to win their first European Championship, which they are favourites to do.
Ahead of the big announcement, Ladbrokes looks the seven players who, rather heartbreakingly, will likely miss out on a spot in the final Euro 2024 squad, despite the initial excitement of being included on the long list.
Likely England Euro 2024 squad – Goalkeepers
Ahead of Southgate’s official final squad announcement, Ladbrokes looks what we think the former Middlesbrough manager’s 26-man line-up is going to look like when he picks his team to travel to Germany, starting with the men between the sticks.
- GK – Jordan Pickford
- GK – Aaron Ramsdale
- GK - Nick Pope
We're of the belief that Pickford, Pope and Henderson will be England’s three goalkeepers on the plane to Germany this summer, which would see Burnley's James Trafford miss out.
Trafford was a somewhat surprisingly inclusion in the provisional England squad, with Southgate clearly keen to take a closer look at the young goalkeeper, but we don't think he'll end up being taken on the plane to Germany for this summer's tournament, despite being a highly-rated prospect.
Of course, Southgate could decide to pick Trafford over Henderson in this one, mainly because the spot up for grabs is for the third-choice goalkeeper, who is unlikely to play. The manager may feel that Trafford can gain more from being in and around the camp at a major tournament, even if he isn't going to play, but we can't see that happening in truth.
Likely England Euro 2024 squad – Defenders
- RB – Kyle Walker
- RB – Kieran Trippier
- CB – John Stones
- CB – Lewis Dunk
- CB - Ezri Konsa
- CB – Harry Maguire
- CB – Joe Gomez
- CB - Marc Guehi
You'll notice that we haven't picked a left-back in the England squad, and that's something that Southgate alluded to in his press conference after the 33-man shortlist was announced.
The Three Lions' boss said that Luke Shaw is a major doubt for the tournament due to injury, stating that he's 'up against it' and may not be deemed fit enough to feature. If that's the case, then expect Gomez and Konsa to get the nod, given that they can be play at full-back, despite being natural centre-halves.
Missing out are young defenders Jarrad Branthwaite and Jarell Quansah, who'll definitely feature for England in future tournaments, but this one comes just too soon for them, despite impressive seasons with their respective Merseyside clubs.

Likely England Euro 2024 squad – Midfielders
- CM – Declan Rice
- CM – Jude Bellingham
- CM – Conor Gallagher
- CM – Trent Alexander-Arnold
- CM – James Maddison
- CM - Adam Wharton
- CM – Koibbe Mainoo
Rice, Bellingham and Trent are expected to be England’s starting midfielders, whilst Gallagher, Maddison and Mainoo will be waiting in the wings in case of injury or the need for rotation.
Also getting the nod is Adam Wharton, who looked right at home in the centre of midfield for England on his senior debut against Bosnia in the first warm-up game, earning the call-up after shining for Crystal Palace following his January 2024 move from Blackburn.
Given that it was Wharton who was brought on as a substitute rather than Curtis Jones, we expect the Liverpool midfielder to miss out on the Euro 2024 squad, with Mainoo also being someone that Southgate clearly prefers.
Likely England Euro 2024 squad – Attackers
- LW – Phil Foden
- LW – Anthony Gordon
- LW - Jack Grealish
- RW – Bukayo Saka
- RW – Cole Palmer
- RW - Jarrod Bowen
- ST – Harry Kane
- ST – Ollie Watkins
Foden, Kane and Saka are expected to be England’s starting front three this summer after incredibly impressive performances for their respective clubs this season. We're also expecting Gordon, Palmer, Grealish, Bowen and Watkins to be included in the squad, but who misses out?
Ebereci Eze and Ivan Toney were also included in the 33-man squad, but we expect the Palace and Brentford forwards to be cut before the final 26-man list is announced on June 7. They're immensely talented, and will definitely play more for their country over the years, but Gordon, Bowen, Saka, Palmer, Grealish and Foden are simply too good to not get in over them.

Taking all that into consideration, below is the 26 man squad we feel Southgate will be picking to travel to Germany for Euro 2024 this summer…
