Senior Football Championship Predictions - Round 1

Dublin v Roscommon 5pm Croke Park

Roscommon have had a full five weeks to dust themselves down after their defeat to Mayo but it doesn’t get much tougher than a first round clash with Dublin. They will look at what worked for Louth and how they frustrated the Dubs.

That said the Boys in Blue are on a different level and as this game opens up, I expect them to get the scores that will do the damage and pull away with a comfortable victory here.

Louth v Meath 5:30pm Iniskeen

Louth will be delighted with the performance they gave in the Leinster Final against the Dubs and it’s clear to see the hard work that Ger Brennan has done since he has taken over from Mickey Harte.

It's six weeks now since that 16 point hammering Meath suffered to Dublin and I am not sure if Colm O’Rourke has the players that will get them into the preliminary quarterfinals. The Wee County have far greater scoring power and I am backing them for the win at 8/13.

Armagh v Westmeath 6pm Athletic Grounds

What a tough couple of weeks for the Armagh men and Kieran McGeeney since they lost the Ulster Final yet again on penalties. They will have to dust themselves down, put it behind them, and get ready for the All-Ireland series.

They certainly will not be taking Dessie Dolan’s Westmeath team for granted. Westmeath will have counted themselves so unlucky not to have qualified for the preliminary quarterfinals last year and know they should have beaten Tyrone. That said I think Armagh will have enough for Westmeath to see them through this game and I am going for a home win.

Donegal v Tyrone 7:15pm Ballybofey

Fresh after their Ulster title victory against Armagh, Donegal now face a real banana skin at home to Tyrone. Tyrone will be buzzing after their U20 team defeated the Kingdom to win the All-Ireland.

It will be interesting if any of those players make the step up to the panel and Donegal certainly won’t have things their own way here. I believe this game will go right down to the wire.

Donegal will know they were very lucky to get out of jail against Armagh. I still think they will continue their 100% record under Jim McGuinness’ reign and I will go with a home victory here.
