Matt Cardle surged to the head of the X Factor betting after an inspired performance of “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” at bootcamp and he has not looked back since.

The unique vocals and easy demeanour of the former painter and decorator have endeared him to the viewing public and after the two weeks of live TV shows he is the 5/2 favourite to win the X Factor.

Matt remained in the background after passing through his first audition, but thrust himself to the front of the judges’ minds when choosing the Roberta Flack number at bootcamp.

Despite being traditionally a song for a female voice, Matt’s ability to sing in a high pitch suited the track perfectly.

Mentor Dannii Minogue get her first sight of Matt at the judge’s house stage and also fell in love with what she heard to pick him as one of her four contestants in the boys’ category.

Matt has remained current with his first two song choices, but has been told on each occasion that if he were to release these covers then they would fare well in the charts.

The one question mark hanging over Matt is whether he has the personality to win the X Factor when the competition reaches its latter stages.

His decision to remove his trademark hat may also work in his favour, as there is a chance that this could enhance his appeal further among the female audience.

Matt is 1/4 to be the last boy remaining in the X Factor, but he does face a worthy challenge from Aiden Grimshaw, who impressed on the first live show before disappointing slightly with his version of John Lennon’s Jealous Guy.
