Northampton striker McKay sets high goalscoring target

Billy McKay has set his sights on firing Northampton towards League Two promotion this season after grabbing his first goal of the campaign in the Carling Cup victory against Brighton.

The striker was unable to prevent the Cobblers falling to the foot of the league table after suffering a 3-0 opening-day defeat at Torquay, but they quickly put this behind them to improve on their Carling Cup performance of last year when they were eliminated in the first round by Southampton.

McKay struck the important second goal in the 2-0 win over the League One opposition and is hoping to use this as a springboard to doubling the eight times he found the scoresheet during the last campaign.

The 21-year-old told BBC Radio Northampton: “When the fans notice what you’re doing out there, it’s a confidence boost.

“If I can double what I got last year, that’d be a good season. Hopefully, this will kick-start the season.”

Northampton are currently preparing for their first league outing of the campaign at the Sixfields Stadium and are 5/6 to collect the three points against Accrington.

McKay may also be optimistic about finding the target against Accrington as he struck twice in the corresponding fixture from last season as Northampton ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

They also won 3-0 in the away game, with the striker grabbing the final goal after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Northampton are 16/1 to seal promotion to League One come May as champions, while McKay is 33/1 to finish as the division’s top goalscorer.
