Pliskova crashes out – and now Konta is 9/2 Wimbledon favourite

Johanna Konta is the new 9/2 favourite to win Wimbledon this summer – and end Britain’s 40-year wait for a Ladies champion.

Konta’s odds came tumbling in last night in the wake of Karolina Pliskova’s three-set loss to Magdalena Rybarikova.

The 26-year-old Konta had been 7/1, before being trimmed into 6/1 following her superb victory over Donna Vekic in round two.

And her odds came crashing down yesterday as Pliskova threw away victory at SW19.

The Czech Republic ace had been-well fancied pre-tournament, but despite dominating on the WTA Tour, has again failed to come good on the big stage.

So Konta now leads the betting, and the odds suggest he has a fantastic chance of becoming Britain’s first Ladies’ singles Wimbledon champion since Virginia Wade in 1977.

Angelique Kerber is second in the market, but odds of 9/1 highlight how strongly Konta is fancied by our traders.

The German is the world number one, but has been in dismal form so far this year.

Coco Vanderweghe, Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep are each next up at 10s.

Then it’s 11/1 for 37-year-old Venus Williams to win her sixth Wimbledon title – and her first since 2008.

Konta’s route to the latter stages won’t be plain sailing however. After Maria Sakkari in round three, she will face either Caroline Garcia or Madison Brengle.

Garcia has beaten Konta as recently as Indian Wells this year, while Brengle has won three of four meetings with the Brit.

After that, it could likely be a clash with Halep in the quarters, although Konta has won both previous meetings with the Romanian player.

But for now she’s the strong favourite, and is on course to end Britain’s 40-year wait.
