Royal Ascot Gold Cup: List of Past Winners
Published:
One of the most famous and oldest races in the world, the Ascot Gold Cup is the showpiece event of Royal Ascot. Taking place at Ascot Racecourse, the race is run over 2 miles, 3 furlongs and 210 yards and horses must be four years old or over.

First held in 1807, the Gold Cup is one of the most prestigious events in the UK for horses with a bit of stamina (or “stayers”). It always takes place on the third day of Royal Ascot – known as Ladies Day.
The first ever winner took home 100 guineas and was watched by King George III and Queen Charlotte. Last year’s winner Stradivarius, ridden by Frankie Dettori received £283,550.
But most interesting to keep your eye on are the trends. Of the last 17 Ascot Gold Cup favourites, 13 of them have finished in the top three and the favourite has won six times in the last ten years. If these trends weren’t enough to whet your appetite, we’ve got plenty more in our Gold Cup preview.

Race Records
Trainer Aidan O’Brien must love the Ascot Gold Cup, having won the race seven times. Mostly thanks to Yeats, who had the Midas touch for a four year run from 2006 – 2009. Unsurprisingly Yeats is also the most successful horse at the Gold Cup with four wins.
The top jock title belongs to Lester Piggot whose name sounds like it should be Cockney rhyming slang, but it isn’t. We checked. He has taken home the Gold eleven times, on eight different horses. If you’re interested, they are, Zarathustra (1957), Gladness (1958), Pandofell (1961), Twilight Alley (1963), Fighting Charlie (1965), Sagaro (1975, 1976, 1977), Le Moss (1979), Ardross (1981, 1982).
John and Sue Magnier are the top owners with seven winners, courtesy of Gold Cup wizard, Aidan O’Brien (Yeats, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, Fame and Glory, 2011, Leading Light, 2014, Order of St George, 2016). The most famous winning owner has to be the Queen, who’s horse Estimate won in 2013.
