Spieth lives up to his billing but Masters far from bagged

Thanks to a deluge leading up to the 2015 Masters, Augusta National looked ripe for some low scoring and no one exposed the gentle conditions more expertly than Jordan Spieth on day one.

The 21-year-old American, who finished runner-up on Masters debut last year, went off as 10/1 second favourite with Ladbrokes and having shot an opening-round 64 there will be plenty of punters delighted to have scooped the price.

Holding a three-shot lead over a quartet of players on -5, Spieth’s odds have now shrivelled into 9/4 to earn his first Green Jacket.

The Texan has now played five rounds at Augusta and featured in the top three on the leaderboard after four of them.

Spieth is far from home and hosed at this early stage, though, especially as no one has led the field on Thursday night and still been seen there at close of play Sunday since Trevor Immelman back in 2008.

There are plenty of familiar faces lurking with intent near the summit and not least two other Major winners in the form of Justin Rose and Ernie Els on five-under-par, priced at 10/1 and 33s respectively.

Rose was back to his Ryder Cup best after a pretty anonymous start to the year, but having faded badly following handy starts at the event in the past, Jason Day alongside him may just be the pick at 5s.

The Australian rattled off five consecutive birdies down the back nine to confirm his chances, at a course where he tied for second in 2011 and finished third two years ago.

Recent history also states that players hoping to kit out their wardrobe with a Green Jacket, should be within four shots of the lead to have a chance.

The likes of multiple former champ Phil Mickelson (-2) and fellow American Dustin Johnson (-2) will scoff at the idea they are out of it yet though, with so much golf still to play.

Pre-tournament favourite Rory McIlroy and defending champion Bubba Watson have much to do another shot back, but odds of 8/1 and 20/1 still have plenty of appeal on players who are well capable of going on birdie sprees.

The shot of the day belonged to Sergio Garcia, who chipped in from around 70ft on the 14th, en-route to a 68 on day one, leaving the Spaniard at 20/1 for that elusive Major win.
