The jewel in the tiara of Ladies Day at Royal Ascot is the Gold Cup, which pits the cream of the staying division against each other for entrants four-years old or over.
Due to the misfortune of 2014 winner Leading Light’s enforced retirement through injury, there will be a new name on the 2015 Gold Cup other than Aidan O’Brien’s St Leger victor.
The Irish threat looks particularly strong once again for day three’s showpiece, but that will be spearheaded by Dermot Weld rather than O’Brien’s string according to Ladbrokes with Forgotten Rules heading the betting.

Alex My Boy: Although this Irish four-year-old has fared well early this season, both a second place and a win arrived on very soft ground in France. Difficult to see how this form will convert in probable Ascot conditions, especially as he was a non event in the King George V Stakes at the festival 12 months ago and came nowhere in the St Leger either.
Clever Cookie: Much to admire about this seven-year-old’s claims on the evidence of two wins from two starts this season, especially when trumping short-priced favourite Tac De Boistron – 12/1 here – at Chester in May. Tailed off in better company during the summer months last season though, so will have to buck that trend.
Forgotten Rules: Four wins from four starts under rules have got tongues wagging about this Dermot Weld-trained five-year-old who is set to go off as strong favourite. A Group 2 winner of the British Champions Long Distance Cup around Ascot back in November, albeit on heavy ground, revealed staying power to burn. Beware of the weather, though, if the ground can be described as anything firmer than good, Weld has hinted he’ll pull the plug on Forgotten Rules.
Mizzou: This Irish raider’s Sagaro Stakes win back in late April over a 2m trip on good-to firm ground at Ascot confirmed his Gold Cup credentials must be taken very seriously. As four-year-olds have claimed the honours in the last three years, this also bodes very well for Mizzou who is second only to Forgotten Rules in the ante post market.
Vent De Force: Hot on the hooves of Mizzou in the Sagaro Stakes, a potential star in the making from Hughie Morrison’s yard was very impressive on his last appearance. Expertly piloted by Richard Hughes, this more-than lively 8/1 chance made all to leave Trip To Paris among half a dozen others trailing at Sandown.
