The British Athletics season is well and truly underway, and this weekend offers up another showcase event which has deeper meaning than others.

Arena Birmingham hosts the British Indoor Athletics Championship, with qualification up for grabs to represent Great British and Northern Ireland in the European Championships in Glasgow between 1st and 3rd of March.

We look at some of the hot-shots looking to book their places on the squad…

Reece Prescod has hit the form of his life at just the right time after setting a 60m personal best in the ISTAF indoor meet in Berlin.

The talented 22-year old ran his PB in a time of 6.53 seconds to pick up a win, and will look to further improve his form this weekend.

In the women’s 60m, it was another Brit who smashed a personal best. 19-year old Kristal Awuah recorded a time of 7.19 seconds over the short burst, shaving over a tenth of a second off her previous best.

Morgan Lake has been on the high jump scene for a few years now, and will be looking to improve on her performance in the IAAF World Indoor Championships from last year.

She finished just outside the medals in fourth, but will be looking to retain her domestic crown here and throw her name into the European Championships in Glasgow. Will she beat last year’s winning jump of 1.88m though?

In the Women’s 1500m of the European Indoor Championships last year, Laura Muir was the victor, and added the silver medal to her collection at the IAAF World Indoors later in the year.

The Men’s 1500m will see Jake Wightman pushing to improve on his bronze medal performance from last year at the Europeans. He also picked up a bronze in the same discipline in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Will he be able to improve on his current personal best of 3:33.96?

A name recognisable to everyone in British Athletics is Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Last year, she managed a season’s best jump of 6.71m in preparation of the European and World championships.

Although she mainly competes in the heptathlon, she’ll be looking to come top of the leaderboards in the Long Jump. Will she be able to beat her personal best of 6.93m? She’s likely to be a major contender in whatever she competes in, and could push her personal best this year.
