Why Airdrieonians can reach 10 straight wins in Ladbrokes League 1

Published:

Airdrieonians fans have been treated to an early Christmas present in Ladbrokes League 1, with the Diamonds having moved from the lower part of the table to second spot with an incredible six-game winning streak.

And there’s plenty of reason to believe Marc Wilson’s side can record a perfect 10 of league victories, and go on to win the League 1 title.

The former Scotland international has revived the Diamonds’ fortunes since taking over as head coach at the end of October, chalking up a 100 per cent win rate from his quartet of league games so far.

Most tellingly, the rookie boss has brought the best out of young striker Andrew Ryan, with the 22-year-old netting five times in as many games since Wilson’s arrival.

Fans of the North Lanarkshire club will also have been impressed by the partnership he’s developed with the experienced Iain Russell. The well-balanced pairing of the hardworking and talented veteran with Ryan’s pace and instinctive finishing has flourished so far under Wilson.

Meanwhile at the other end, two clean sheets in the last five games have helped the side do it the ugly way when necessary, grinding out 1-0 triumphs against Brechin City, and away at East Fife – a game where the Diamonds finished with just 10 men.

However, despite the narrow margin of scoreline in those two games, Airdrieonians’ current winning streak has rarely looked in danger of ending.

They haven’t gone behind in any of the last six Ladbrokes League 1 games, and have kept – and retained – a first-half lead on five of those occasions.

With the bookies offering 14/1 for the Diamonds to win their next four league games to reach a magic 10, we suggest you jump on it. Especially so when you consider the run of fixtures awaiting Wilson’s side…

Stenhousemuir have lost four of their last five league outings, conceding 15 times in the process, while Stranraer and Albion Rovers have fared little better in the same period.

Meanwhile, the Diamonds will be desperate to end a sequence of losses to Livingston when the pair meet later this week – with the visitors peaking at the right time to exact revenge against a Livi side who lost twice in November.

Elsewhere, it’s 200/1 for Airdrieonians to go unbeaten for the rest of the league campaign, while 5000/1 says they achieve the near-impossible feat of winning every remaining game.

However, if you were to back any side in Ladbrokes League 1 to give you a run for your money in those markets, it would have to be the North Lanarkshire outfit.

And with the league’s in-form strike partnership, a manager with the Midas touch and an increasingly solid defence, we recommend jumping on the 9/2 for Airdrieonians to win the title before their continued success sees those odds shrink.
