Winter slashed for the Oaks but Rhododendron still favourite
Published:
Winter led home an Aidan O’Brien 1-2 in yesterday’s 1000 Guineas and as a result we’ve slashed her on odds on landing this year’s Oaks at Epsom.
The Classic winner is now 7/1 from 40/1 to win next month’s 1m4f contest in Surrey although Guineas runner-up Rhododendron remains the favourite at 9/4.
Jockey Ryan Moore found no luck in-running onboard Rhododendron with stablemate Hydrangea impeding his mount’s path.
However, big race gamble Winter was already well clear by the time Moore could switch inside and chase the eventual victor home.
Having already landed the 2000 Guineas with Churchill a day earlier, O’Brien’s second string completed the Classic double and in doing so landed a fourth 1000 Guineas renewal for the master handler.
Guineas fourth Talaayeb has also been cut for the Oaks, coming in to 12/1 from 14/1.
Earlier in the day, Somehow landed the Dahlia Stakes in impressive fashion at Newmarket.
And with O’Brien citing the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury as a potential next destination, our odds-compilers have reacted by cutting her odds for success in that contest from 20/1 to 12/1.
Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: “Although there was money for Winter during the week, we are totally relieved by today’s result. She was a small loser ante-post, but one we are happy to take given the damage we could have incurred if Rhododendron won.”
