Worth taking punt on Sir Bradley Wiggins smashing hour record

As the betting suggests for Sir Bradley Wiggins’ forthcoming UCI Hour Record attempt, it’s not so much a case of whether he breaks Alex Dowsett’s freshly-set mark, it’s by how far.
Barring a catastrophe, the world and Olympic time-trial champion is virtually guaranteed to further the distance of 52.937km when he takes to London’s Lee Valley VeloPark on Sunday.
This is backed up by odds of 1/6 that Sir Bradley simply breaks the record; opposed by a price of 7/2 he fails in his attempt.
The 2013 Tour de France winner is known for his bullishness and all the pre-match patter suggests he is not simply aiming to break it, rather tear it down.
When quizzed in the aftermath of Dowsett’s own record-breaking ride, Wiggins was typically cocksure with his assessments.
“Based on what I’ve been doing in the last three weeks I should be quite a way ahead of that [52.9km],” Wiggins said.
“We’ve been training on 54km dead as a guide but it could go one kilometre further or 500m shorter, depending on conditions on the day.”
Unlike many other riders preparing to take on this prestigious 60-minute challenge, Wiggins has admitted to putting in the full hour in training, so his estimations are not going to be way out by that reckoning.
With this is mind, it seems to make sense for Ladbrokes customers to throw caution to the wind and go higher rather than lower where the bookmaker’s line is concerned.
It’s evens that Wiggins records a distance over the 54.5k mark and 8/11 he ends up falling short of it.
Having achieved virtually everything his sport has to offer, the recently retired road cyclist is sure to give this one his best shot too.
