Klose sees red as Germany are rocked by Serbia defeat
Published:Miroslav Klose was controversially sent off as Germany lost 1-0 to Serbia, leaving Group D well and truly up for grabs.
Milan Jovanovic’s goal proved to be the winner, but the match was overshadowed by the referee’s baffling management of a game which did not warrant such strict officiating.
Klose’s first half red card deprived Germany of an attacking pivot, though Lukas Podolski troubled the Serbian defence.
Serbia took full and immediate advantage of Klose’s dismissal as Jovanovic pounced on a Nicola Zigic knock-down to score from six yards.
Podolski had chances to equalise, as he flashed numerous shots wide before seeing his penalty saved.
Germany also went close as Sami Khedira’s shot cannoned off the crossbar and Thomas Muller’s rebound was cleared off the line.
Jovanovic hit the post and Nicola Zigic headed against the bar, but Serbia were content to sit back and defend their lead.
Germany, Serbia and Ghana are now all level on three points each in Group D, which leaves the identity of England’s second round opponents a mystery.
