Transfer news – Clinton Morrison makes Sheffield Wednesday move

Former Crystal Palace and Coventry City striker Clinton Morrison has completed a free transfer to League One side Sheffield Wednesday.

Morrison becomes Owls boss Alan Irvine’s eighth signing of the summer, and improves the Yorkshire club’s chances of winning their division considerably. They are currently 6/1 second-favourites behind 5/2 shot Southampton.

The 31-year-old has never played below the second tier of English football – featuring in the Premiership with Birmingham City following a £4.2million transfer – and should be able to find goals easy to come by in League One.

He was Coventry’s top scorer last season with 11 league goals in 46 appearances and has bagged nine times for the Republic of Ireland at international level.

Coincidentally, Morrison has scored 11 goals in 16 appearances against Wednesday during his career. He said: “It’s been a lucky place for me over the years and hopefully I can keep that going – but this time it’s my club.”

Morrison, who has 151 goals in 413 professional starts, joins a clutch of former top-flight players arriving at Hillsborough for nothing, and making Sheffield Wednesday’s bid for an immediate return to the Championship all the more likely.

Ex Liverpool striker Neil Mellor has joined on a season-long loan from Preston North End, winger Gary Teale, once of Wigan Athletic, moved on a free from Derby County after his contract expired and full-back Jon Otsemobor, a product of the Liverpool youth system, was brought over from Southampton.

Irivine has also signed midfielder Chris Sedgwick from the manager’s old club Preston, Doncaster Rovers’ Paul Heffernan, Wolverhampton’s 23-year-old left back Daniel Jones, and Giles Coke, once of Motherwell, all on free transfers.

The League One title race is heating up and Sheffield Wednesday must fight off strong Huddersfield Town and Charlton Athletic teams, who are 8/1 and 9/1 to win the title respectively. See the full League One betting market.
