Transfer news – Newcastle close to sealing Gosling deal

Published:

Newcastle are poised to mark their return to the Premier League with a host of new signings, and Dan Gosling is set to become the latest arrival at St James’ Park.

Gosling has left Everton after refusing to sign a new contract, and the 20-year-old midfielder is expected to agree a four-year deal with the Toon Army.

The England Under-21 international could cost Newcastle £4m in compensation to Everton, and manager Chris Hughton is keen to bolster his Championship-winning squad.

Hughton has already signed defender James Perch from Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee.

Newcastle open their Premier League campaign with a trip to Old Trafford, and they are 11/1 to beat Manchester United.

Newcastle’s North East rivals, Sunderland, have also dipped into the transfer market, as they have held talks with Sol Campbell over a possible move.

Campbell is a free agent having left Arsenal, and he has also been in contractual negotiations with Celtic.

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan is another player to be linked with Sunderland, and his club Rennes are reportedly unwilling to sell their asset for less than £7m.

Sunderland have already signed defender Ahmed Al-Muhyammadi on a season-long loan, while Argentina international full-back Marcos Angeleri has trained with the club.

Sunderland’s first game of the season will be at home to Birmingham, and the Black Cats are evens to win.
