Carlisle boss Abbott taking another late goal on the chin
Published:Carlisle boss Greg Abbott refuses to be too downbeat despite his side conceding a late goal for the second time in a week in a 1-1 draw away at Plymouth.
Abbott watched Jordan Rhodes score in the last minute for Huddersfield to knock the Cumbrians out of the Carling Cup in midweek and then Rory Patterson struck in the 94th minute to earn Plymouth a point in the second round of League One fixtures.
The goal cancelled out Ian Harte’s opener and cost Carlisle their 100 per cent start to the league season, although they still sit within the play-off places in fourth spot.
Abbott told the Carlisle News and Star: “There isn’t much wrong with what we did in the game. We’re disappointed about how it finished but we take it on the chin.”
Despite their promising start, Carlisle remain 40/1 to win League One, while Plymouth, who also have four points after two games, are 16/1.
Oldham and Charlton are the only two teams to still have 100 per cent records after victories over Notts County and Leyton Orient respectively.
Southampton remain the 3/1 favourites to seal promotion as champions, with Huddersfield, who drew 0-0 at home to Tranmere, next best at 4/1.
Bournemouth were the weekend’s biggest winners thanks to a romping 5-1 triumph over Peterborough.
Brett Pitman helped himself to a 15-minute, second-half hat-trick in the success and in doing so becomes the division’s current top scorer with three strikes.
He is now 12/1 to finish the season as the top League One goalscorer, with Southampton’s Rickie Lambert the 9/2 favourite.
Lambert has finished as the top goalscorer in the last two League One seasons, netting 31 goals during the last campaign for Southampton after scoring 29 goals for Bristol Rovers.
