Millen named as Bristol City boss after Coppell hands in resignation
Published:Keith Millen will be responsible for leading Bristol City’s charge towards the Premier League as he has been named as the replacement for Steve Coppell.
Coppell recently told chairman Steve Lansdown of his shock decision to resign with immediate effect, stating that he no longer had the passion for the role to give it the commitment it required.
He added that he was also retiring permanently from football management, although he hoped that make further contributions to the game at some point in the future.
Bristol City had not made the brightest start to the season, losing 3-0 at home to Millwall in their opening Championship game of the campaign before being dumped out of the Carling Cup in the first round by Southend.
Millen has previous experience of managing the club on a temporary basis and will have aspirations of securing promotion to the Premier League, for which they are 6/1.
If they are promoted it will represent their first ever experience of Premier League football and they are currently 20/1 to reach the top flight by winning the Championship this season.
Millen’s first game in charge after agreeing a three-year contract is a trip to Doncaster, where they are 13/5 to collect maximum points.
However, they will have to do so without the services of star striker Nicky Maynard, who could face a further four weeks on the sidelines to undergo knee surgery.
Maynard found the target 21 times last season, but is yet to kick a ball so far during the current campaign.
His injury confirmation adds to Millen’s striker problems, as Sam Vokes, on-loan from Wolves, tore a hamstring in the Millwall defeat and Danny Haynes is also injured.
