Ipswich show their promotion credentials by beating Cardiff

Both Ipswich and Cardiff suffered their first league defeats of the season in midweek but it was the Tractor Boys who responded in style in their clash at Portman Road, triumphing 2-0 over last season’s play-off finalists.

Many expected impressive starters Ipswich to fall away after their home loss to league leaders QPR on Tuesday night, however a comedy own goal by Cardiff youngster Adam Matthews and a strike by summer signing Jason Scotland saw them climb to second.

This is the first time in six seasons that the East Anglian club have been in the automatic promotion positions outside of August and Roy Keane’s side can be backed at 9/1 to sustain their form and win the Championship.

They remain behind Dave Jones’ side in the betting despite yesterday’s result. The Welsh side are 5/1 to finish first, presumably due to the presence of Craig Bellamy in their squad, however the on-loan striker has missed the last three games because of injury.

Cardiff’s second successive reverse allowed QPR to extend their advantage at the top to five points with a 2-0 victory away to former manager Paulo Sousa’s Leicester, with runaway top Championship goalscorer Jamie Mackie grabbing both goals.

Are the west Londoners there to stay? They are 7/4 to end the season in top spot. See the full Npower Championship 2010/11 Betting Odds market.
