Preston get to keep Hume, but Hayes goes out on loan

In a bizarre swap deal, Barnsley have completed the signing of Preston striker Paul Hayes on loan.

Hayes only joined Preston in the summer, but has fallen behind Jon Parkin, Manchester United youngster Joshua King and Barnsley loanee Iain Hume in the pecking order at Deepdale.

This loan deal has come about as Preston battle to convince Barnsley to let them keep striker Hume on a permanent basis.

The Canadian international has made a good impression on loan at Deepdale, scoring two goals, and has indicated he wants to sign for Preston.

Speaking last week he said: “I have enjoyed my time at Barnsley and the supporters were very good to me, but I have got a fresh lease of life at Preston and I am settled here.

“I am contracted to Barnsley and if they insist that I go back that is what I must do. I am hoping, however, that the two clubs can come to an arrangement.”

Barnsley boss Mark Robins has said he hasn’t made a decision about Hume’s future, but was delighted to secure Hayes’ temporary signature.

“I’m very pleased to have brought Paul Hayes. He’s someone I tried to get in the summer but missed out on because Preston made him an offer he could not refuse” he explained.

Barnsley do need some extra firepower, they’ve only won one out of their last six games and face a tricky match up with Hull next in the Championship.

The Tykes are slight favourites at 5/4, but the Tigers are only 9/4, so there clearly isn’t a tremendous amount to separate the two sides.

That could be because Hull’s recent record is as bad as that of Barnsley, one win in six.

Unfortunately their win came a full five games ago, whereas Barnsley was just a fortnight ago against Nottingham Forest.

Paul Hayes is 5/1 to score the first goal against Hull, follow the full Championship odds market here.
