Newcastle United sack Chris Hughton after poor run of form
Published:Newcastle United have sacked boss Chris Hughton.
Hughton – who guided Newcastle to 5-1 victory over bitter rivals Sunderland at the end of October – has been let go to bring in a more experienced manager, with Martin O’Neill the early favourite at 2/1.
The Magpies have gone five Premier League games without a victory following their brilliant 1-0 win against Arsenal, although they have drawn two of those matches, including a 1-1 draw with Champions Chelsea.
A statement on the Newcastle United website said: “Newcastle United Football Club have today parted company with manager Chris Hughton. Goalkeeping coach Paul Barron also leaves the club today.
“The board would like to place on record their thanks to Chris for his considerable efforts during the club’s transition from Championship to Premier League football. Chris has shown exceptional character and commitment since being appointed manager in October 2009. The club wishes him well for the future.
“Regrettably the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.
“The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor.”
Hughton took over the Newcastle job from Alan Shearer in the summer of 2009 following their relegation to the Championship.
He then guided them straight back to the Premier League, gaining over 100 points in the process of winning the league. The Magpies are currently 11th in the Premier League and 9/2 to be relegated.
