Day 8 Womens – Back Sharapova to overcome Peng

Published:

Maria Sharapova knows what it takes to win Wimbledon and has consistently shown her Grand Slam winning pedigree this week.

Things should be no different for the Russian against China’s Shuai Peng this Monday, with Sharapova set to have a comfortable afternoon.

After years of injury problems, the 2004 Wimbledon champion and former world No.1 is approaching her best form.

However, despite her march to the last 16, Sharapova is still weary of the threat posed by Peng.

“She has a great game for the grass,” said Sharapova.

“She hits really flat, stays quite low. Her balls come pretty deep. The last time we played was in Indian Wells earlier this year. It was a tough match.

“She’s playing some of the best tennis of her career. No doubt she’ll be out there playing loose and good tennis so I’ll have to be ready.”

The three previous meetings between the players have seen Sharapova come out on top twice – including a 2-1 win at Indian Wells earlier this season.

Sharapova was also convincing in her 6-2, 6-3 victory over Klara Zakopalova on Saturday.

With Sharapova hitting form at the right time and Peng never having made it past the last 16 at Wimbledon before, everything is pointing to a comfortable win for the Russian.

Back Sharapova to win in straight sets at a very tempting 4/7.
