Premier League preview: The best and worst bets for top goal scorer

Published:

With 20 goals being the benchmark for finishing as Premier League top scorer there are many players going into the season confident of hitting those heights, meaning there is plenty of value to be found in the betting markets.

Best bets

Javier Hernandez – 6/1 to finish as top scorer

The 23-year-old Mexican managed 13 Premier League goals in 27 appearances in his first season in English football.

He also has the best goals to shots ratio in the last six seasons of the Premier league and will start the season as first choice striker for Manchester United.

Robin van Persie – 10/1 to finish as top scorer

The Dutchman hit the net 18 times in 19 starts in the last campaign and if it wasn’t for injury it’s likely he would have topped the goalscoring charts.

If he can stay fit for the entire season, he’s definitely worth a punt.

Luis Suarez – 12/1 to finish as top scorer

As soon as Suarez was signed in January he took to terrorising Premier League defences like he was born to do it. The fact he only managed four goals in 12 appearances comes as a bit of a surprise.

Having had half a season to settle, we think he’ll hit the ground running in this campaign.

Worst bets

Carlos Tevez – 9/1 to finish as top scorer

Despite finishing as joint top scorer last season and hitting the 20 goal mark in both seasons at City, a potential move away from Manchester in August or January could well prevent him from topping the charts.

Fernando Torres – 8/1 to finish as top scorer

Many punters are backing the Spaniard to regain his previous form and shine at Stamford Bridge this season.

During his most successful seasons at Liverpool, Torres only hit the 20 league goal mark once and has never finished as Premier League top scorer.

Sergio Aguero – 8/1 to finish as top scorer

During his time at Atletico Madrid, Aguero had a season best tally of 20 goals, averaging 17 in each of his seasons at the club.

At City he is likely to face stiff competition for a starting berth and having to adjust to a new league is likely to count against him.
