Evra demands Man Utd tighten up defence for Liverpool game

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has urged his side get back to their defensive best ahead of their grudge match at Anfield this Saturday.

United head into the game as narrow favourites at 11/8, but their defence will have to be a lot better than it has been in recent games if they are to stop the likes of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll – who both scored in their last Premier League outing at Everton.

United’s swashbuckling start to the season has gone some way to disguising their defensive frailties, with the experienced Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both struggling for fitness this term.

United have kept just three clean sheets in their opening eight Premier League games and threw away a two goal lead against Basel in their last Champions League match – and it’s a problem that is causing Evra some concern.

Speaking to the Telegraph, he said: ”I want us to go back to the way we were playing before the Chelsea game.

”We have to defend together, be very compact and not give our opponents too many chances.

”I was disappointed after the Chelsea game because they created a lot of chances and if it had finished 4-4 no one could have said anything.”

However, Liverpool’s defence is also far from watertight.

The Reds haven’t stopped the opposition from scoring in their previous four Premier League home games and haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last four against United.

Backing plenty of goals in this already appetising clash could certainly be worth considering and a repeat of the 3-1 win the Reds enjoyed last time can be backed at 28/1.
