Liverpool v Wigan: Reds to overcome dreary home form

Published:

A shock defeat at QPR on Wednesday night damaged Liverpool’s hopes of a top six finish, but the visit of strugglers Wigan represents a great opportunity for them to get back on track on Saturday, by winning at 2/7.

Their visitors Wigan are currently second-bottom of the Premier League, and are a massive 10/1 to spring a surprise by recording what would be their fourth away success of the season.

Some punters could take interest in the 4/1 on offer for the draw also, with that being the result in the past three meetings between the teams.

As 1-1 has been the scoreline on two of those occasions, including last season’s Anfield encounter, there could too be interest in that outcome occurring on this occasion at 10/1.

Despite Liverpool’s sketchy home form however, an emphatic home victory looks the most likely outcome here, as the Reds showed a vast improvement to record their biggest win of the campaign in their last Anfield league outing, when besting rivals Everton 3-0.

7/1 is the price attributed to that score here, though Kenny Dalglish’s men won’t get a better chance to record a convincing scoreline for the remainder of the season, and so it could be advisable to take advantage of 10/1 odds for a 4-0 Liverpool success instead.

Though slow starters on a regular basis this season, Liverpool have led at half-time in six of their seven Premier League triumphs over the Latics, and that trend can continue with the Reds leading at half-time and full-time at 8/13.

Alternatively, you can back the home side to win both halves at a generous 11/10, which they should manage in front of a home crowd craving goals.

The talismanic Steven Gerrard is a decent 9/2 option to score first, but Andy Carroll could be handed a start for the clash, and can make the most of his opportunity by hitting the opener at the same price.
