May be as many as four British women in Wimbledon round two

Six British women are in the draw for the first round of Wimbledon and there are different levels of expectations on their shoulders both through a mixture of their own abilities and the toughness of the opposition.

Naomi Broady, Heather Watson and Johanna Konta take to the courts in the opening day’s action, while Laura Robson, Anne Keothavong and Elena Baltacha will have to wait until day two to begin.

Lourdes Dominguez Lino to beat Naomi Broady 2-0 at 1/1

Dominguez Lino does not play on grass too often, but the fact she took Marion Bartoli to three sets last year at Wimbledon shows she is not without talent.

She should also be full of confidence after winning on the clay of Marseille in her latest tournament.

Broady’s only win in six matches came via her opponent pulling out mid-match and her lost to Konta at Eastbourne will do little for her chances.

Heather Watson to beat Iveta Benesova @ 1/3

Watson has been in decent form of late, reaching the second round of the French Open and then claiming some notable scalps in the Wimbledon tune-up events, most notably Baltacha and Melanie Oudin.

Benesova lost to Brit Tina Moore in Birmingham, does not have the best grass-court pedigree and arrives at Wimbledon on a four-match losing streak.

Christina McHale to beat Johanna Konta 2-0 @ 3/10

McHale beat Caroline Wozniacki on the grass of Eastbourne recently and then took Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to three sets in a close second round, while she took Na Li to a deciding set at the French Open.

This level of form should be far too much for Konta on her Wimbledon debut and a 2-0 success for the American looks almost a given.

Laura Robson v Francesca Schiavone to go to three sets @ 5/4

Schiavone should triumph and beat Robson in their only previous meeting last year, but she was beaten by Japan’s Misaki Doi in Birmingham recently, who is of a lower world ranking than Robson.

This gives Robson hope, while she had a reasonable run at Eastbourne recently and is known to turn it up a notch at Wimbledon, which could give the former French Open winner, who is also struggling with a thigh problem, a fright.

Anne Keothavong to beat Laura Pous Tio @ 3/10

Pous Tio is on a four-game losing run and has only played on grass once in the last 18 months, losing in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon last year.

Keothavong is more proven on the surface having won more than she has lost of late and has a slightly higher WTA ranking.

Elena Baltacha to beat Karin Knapp @ 2/5

Knapp has not played since the French Open qualifiers and has never previously won at Wimbledon, which suggests that Baltacha can ease through, despite carrying a neck injury that caused her withdrawal at Eastbourne.
