Rodgers hopes to make ex-Chelsea ace his first Liverpool signing

| 13.06.2012

After arriving at Liverpool late last month, Brendan Rodgers has set about identifying potential signings, with Salomon Kalou now thought to be high on his wishlist.

The Ivorian forward, released by Champions League winners Chelsea this summer, is wanted by German outfit Schalke, but Rodgers is now thought to have made a late attempt to scupper the move.

Liverpool are in the hunt for further attacking options, with question marks still surrounding Andy Carroll, and accusations of inconsistent finishing levelled at Luis Suarez.

Kalou appears a viable option, and having worked with Rodgers in the coach’s time at Chelsea, he may be open to the idea of an Anfield switch.

A move for Kalou also seems an appealing prospect for Rodgers, bearing in mind his budget would not be stretched with the addition of the 26-year-old.

No transfer fee would be necessary for the free agent, but it remains to be seen whether or not the Ivory Coast international would prefer to remain in England or not.

Schalke maintain a very real interest in the forward, and can offer him the prospect of Champions League football, whilst a regular starting berth would likely be guaranteed.

Kalou operated more frequently as an impact substitute during his six-year stint at Stamford Bridge, but managed to rack up a decent strike rate that fell just short of a goal every four appearances.

Guaranteed added playing time could sway Kalou, though he seems a player that could seamlessly integrate into a side playing the kind of football which Rodgers promotes.

However, Schalke boss Huub Stevens believes the player is keen to move abroad, and feels that will stand his Bundesliga outfit in good stead to land the attacker.

“It’s obvious – there are many other clubs keen on him. Liverpool for example. But I know for sure he wants to move away from England. This might be our chance.”
