Aguero heads Rooney in Premier League top scorer betting

Sergio Aguero is favourite to finish the season as the Premier League top scorer according to Ladbrokes.

The Argentine – whose last minute goal on the final day of the season saw City claim their maiden Premier League title – is in at 7/1 to improve on his position as third top scorer last term.

He bagged a total of 23 Premier League goals last season – seven less than golden boot winner, Robin van Persie.

Van Persie is out at 10/1 to claim the award again but, with big doubts about whether he’ll be playing in the Premier League next term (never mind whether he can replicate last season’s form), it may be wise to look elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney was just three behind Van Persie with 27 goals and is second favourite at 8/1.

It’s hard to see beyond a player from one of the big teams claiming the award – the last time a player from a side who finished outside the top four won the award was Sunderland’s Kevin Phillips back in the 1999/2000 season.

With that in mind, if you want some slightly longer odds, then Fernando Torres can be baked at 10/1.

The Chelsea striker finished joint top scorer in the European Championships and, with Didier Drogba no longer between him and a regular starting place, that could be a bet well worth consideration – especially considering Chelsea teammate Juan Mata provided 13 assists for the Blues last season.

Further down in the betting, Javier Hernandez is one of the longer priced strikers from a top four club and can be backed at 20/1 to finish with the golden boot.

He will need to get more regular football but, with the Mexican scoring 20 goals in his first season in English football in 2010/2011, that could prove a lucrative long-odds punt.
