Rodgers can better Dalglish with 500/1 treble at Liverpool
Published:Kenny Dalglish came within a whisker of completing the domestic cup double last season with Liverpool and it is just 50/1 that Brendan Rodgers goes the one step better in his first campaign as manager at Anfield.
Dalglish oversaw a nervy penalty shoot-out victory over Cardiff in the Carling Cup final, but Andy Carroll’s goal proved no more than a consolation in the FA Cup equivalent as Chelsea ran out 2-1 winners.
Rodgers appears a potential long-term appointment and is likely to be given some time to build a squad that he feels is capable of challenging for trophies.
However, some silverware would obviously not go amiss this season and it is in the FA Cup and new Capital One Cup that he may have the best opportunity.
Liverpool have some way to go to emulate their feat of four successive League Cup win between 1981 and 1984, but they are more than capable of defending their trophy.
Manchester United did exactly this in 2009 and Liverpool also have a track record of winning the League Cup in the first season in which it is taken over by a new sponsor.
They won the first instalment of the Carling Cup in 2003 and their 1982 success was the first time the competition was known as the Milk Cup because of the sponsorship deal with Dairycrest.
Some punters may even fancy Rodgers matching the achievements of Gerard Houllier in 2001 when he brought the FA Cup, Carling Cup and UEFA Cup treble to Liverpool.
It is 500/1 that Rodgers adds the Europa League to the domestic double and Liverpool face a tricky task on paper as they enter at the third qualifying round, meaning they also have to negotiate the play-off round before reaching the group stages.
However, Atletico Madrid entered at the same stage last season and all three Europa League finals to date have featured a team that had to progress through the qualifying rounds of the competition.
