Dempsey’s drastic actions suggest Anfield move is on

Want-away striker Clint Dempsey will not feature in Fulham’s squad for the first game of the new season against Norwich after refusing to play for the club, fuelling speculation his departure is imminent.

However, even without their star man the Whites are still 4/5 to beat Norwich who haven’t kept a clean sheet on the road in 33 games.

American Dempsey, who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool all summer, has been handed out a fine by Fulham for his refusal to line up against the Canaries at Craven Cottage.

The saga has left manager Martin Jol furious but it seems Dempsey is adamant he will be moving on with the destination still likely to be Anfield.

Dutchman Jol has been less than happy with Liverpool’s conduct over the pursuit of his player which he feels has unsettled the 29-year-old.

“Even [Brendan Rodgers] told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table, so it’s almost embarrassing.

“If you have shown interest in a player, especially in England, you have to follow it up with an offer. They didn’t,” the Fulham manager said.

Jol was referring to comments made to Liverpool’s website just last month by Rodgers stating that he had made an inquiry to Fulham about the player.

In fact the Northern Irishman has been quite vocal about his desire to bring in two to three players before the end of the transfer window even though they have just announced the signing of Moroccan
international Oussama Assaidi.

The 24-year-old winger joins from Heerenveen on a long term deal and becomes Rodgers’ third signing after Fabio Borini and Joe Allen penned deals this summer.

New-look Liverpool are 19/10 to finish in the top four this season.
