Four Championship managers kick off at their new clubs with a win

Published:

This weekend saw four managers begin their tenures at Championship sides with victory.

And the most smug of the lot will be Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway, who watched from the stands at his side won 2-0 against Blackburn to make long odds of 12/1 to win the league tempting.

Olly left Blackpool – currently in 16th place – to take over at the Selhurst Park outfit who will sit third when he takes his first training session at the South London club.

Two goals either side of half time from Glenn Murray were enough to earn Palace all three points and send their fans – and their new manager – home with smiles all around.

Up in Bolton, the man who left the Eagles to take the top job at the Trotters also enjoyed the perfect beginning to his tenure.

Coming from a goal down against league leaders Cardiff, Dougie Freedman inspired the hosts to win 2-1 at the Reebok Stadium.

Bolton are way down the league in 17th, but if the Glaswegian can get the relegated Premier League club firing like this they have a similarly priced outside chance of title success at 12/1.

It is better of thinking about the division in terms of points and not positions, such is its competitiveness, with only eight points separating Cardiff at the top and Bolton toward the bottom.

Mick McCarthy’s first game in charge of Ipswich Town went as well as it conceivably could , with an away win secured at Birmingham thanks to an early DJ Campbell goal.

McCarthy knows he has a job on to lift the Tractor Boys off the bottom of the table, but the ex-Wolves boss has a plethora of managerial experience and will already be targeting another away win at Crystal Palace in mid-week, currently priced at 13/5.

The final winner on an unbelievable weekend for new bosses was Burnley’s Sean Dyche, who had Martin Paterson and goal-machine Charlie Austin to thank for a 2-0 triumph over Wolves.

The Clarets are in 13th place eight points off the lead, but in Austin posses a fearfully ruthless finisher who could help them overcome Leeds United during the week, with a 6/5 win on offer.

One must spare a thought for Blackburn’s debutant manager Henning Berg, who couldn’t join this quadruple of first-time victors as his Rovers team lost at Crystal Palace.

The former Manchester United defender will be hoping to have the last laugh however, as Blackburn are the closest of all five teams to win the league with a current price available at 9/1.
