Chelsea and United options for Falcao after Real Madrid rejection
Published:Monaco’s Radamel Falcao could end up in the Premier League after all this season, after it emerged that Chelsea and Manchester United are viable options for the striker.
The French government are clamping down on Monaco’s tax benefits – which currently sees the club’s foreign players enjoy special tax-free conditions in the Principality state.
And suggestions that Falcao could see his reported £230,000 wage slashes in half by proposals from president Francois Hollande’s regime has seen the Colombian linked with a move away.
Falcao only joined Monaco in May, for around £50million, but suggestions that he could suffer financially allied with his disappointment at the ‘project’ in South France mean he could depart.
According to reports in Spain, Chelsea and United could revive their interest in the 27-year-old, who may be available on a loan basis.
Spanish sports paper Marca claim that Falcao has already been offered to Real Madrid, but he was rejected by Bernabeu president Florentino Perez because of their focus on signing Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.
But with Wayne Rooney the subject of intense speculation, where he ends up at the end of the transfer window could tie in with Falcao’s future.
Jose Mourinho has identified Rooney as his first-choice signing, but having seen Samuel Eto’o installed as a back-up, the Portuguese could be tempted to turn to the Colombian if he becomes available.
While if Rooney were to leave Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge, United may see Falcao as a worthy replacement for the England star.
Chelsea and United were both linked with the former Atletico Madrid frontman earlier this summer, along with Manchester City and Arsenal.
But now feeling he was recruited under false pretences, Falcao could angle for a move to the Premier League before the window shuts on September 2.
Monaco have moved to cool speculation that their star man could be set to leave, posting on Twitter: “The club would like to categorically deny all rumors about Falcao.”
“As a reminder, the Colombian striker has signed for five years at AS Monaco FC.”
