Doncaster v Blackburn: Hosts to prevail in battle of the Rovers

Published:

After a distinctly underwhelming start to management of comedy club Blackburn, Gary Bowyer could find himself having to answer some difficult questions to the Venky’s crowd should Rovers fail to muster a win at Doncaster.

The Lancastrian club head to the Keepmoat on the back of defeat to Nottingham Forest in their last outing and have a last-minute strike from Leon Best to thank for salvaging a draw at Derby in their opener. A penalty shootout defeat at Carlisle saw them eliminated from the Capital One Cup in between these disappointing results.

The visitors are 13/8 to record a first win of the campaign in south Yorkshire with Ladbrokes, while Donny are priced up identically to do the same with the draw a 23/10 shot.

The red and white Rovers have only had one league game this season owing to Wigan’s involvement in the Community Shield and they’ll be looking to resurrect an opening day loss at home to tipped-up strugglers Blackpool with victory here.

Only on one other occasion since the 1998/99 season has Paul Dickov’s side been defeated in their first two outings of the campaign, when Dover and Southport got the better of them in the Conference. So, with their adversaries from across the Pennines failing to hit the ground in an upwardly mobile fashion, backing the Yorkshiremen here could be the way to go.

What might deter one from making such a wager, however, is the fact that the last Doncaster win over a Blackburn outfit came as far back as 1951, with the Ewood Park club claiming the spoils in the latest three meetings, racking up a total of 12 goals.

However, including results from the previous campaign, Blackburn have now won just one of their past nine away games in the Championship, losing six and drawing twice.

They’ve failed to bag in four of these clashes to further egg on potential Donny backers and the 10/3 for a home win to nil could well appeal.
