Arsenal v Tottenham: Spurs’ summer spending could be key

Published:

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur could not have taken a more different approach to this summer’s transfer window and some of Spurs’ new players could decide the match at the Emirates.

Andre Villas-Boas’ team are 11/5 to win the derby, while Arsenal are favourites at 11/10.

The fixture has been remarkable in the consistency of the excitement it has provided fans of each team and neutrals alike, with 13 of the last 14 matches between Arsenal and Spurs going over 2.5 goals.

That trend can be backed at 8/13 to continue, but the arrival of Etienne Capoue and Paulinho at White Hart Lane might see Spurs tighten up to avoid a third consecutive 5-2 thrashing.

Tottenham have yet to concede a goal in four competitive matches this season, and although backing them to do so again at 19/5 might not be advisable, they are unlikely to ship five this season.

In a close match the in-form Roberto Soldado and Olivier Giroud might be decisive in determining the winner.

Soldado has four goals in his first three Spurs appearances, including the only goal in the club’s 1-0 wins over Crystal Palace and Swansea, while Giroud has scored three in four for Arsenal and nabbed the opener in both of their Premier League games.

Spurs’ strikers have opened the scoring in each of their past two trips to the Emirates, and Soldado is a good choice to bag the first goal at 7/1, with Giroud priced at 6/1.

Another trend that has held in the past two meetings at Arsenal is that the home team have won from behind, which is available at a tempting 8/1.

If you do not fancy a striker to be on target at the Emirates, then defenders might be a good choice as one has scored in each of the past four meetings between the two teams.

Per Mertesacker scored in both league matches last season, and is a generous 12/1 to find the net at any time.
