McCarthy transfer set to hinge on Fellaini’s Everton future

Wigan have already rebuffed a £10m offer for midfielder James McCarthy from Everton, but should the Toffees lose Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United then Roberto Martinez will swoop again according to Latics chairman Dave Whelan.

A big part of the festivities associated with the mayhem of transfer deadline day, is certain deals creating a domino effect on others.

One such case in this window is that of highly rated Wigan midfielder McCarthy, whose potential move to Goodison Park – which is currently priced at 1/4 by Ladbrokes – could be swung by whether or not Fellaini’s mooted move to Old Trafford goes through.

It’s 3/1 that McCarthy stays at Wigan, while another potential midfield target Gareth Barry is 4/11 to become a Toffee and 7/4 to remain at Manchester City.

Latics chairman Whelan said: “I hope James stays with us, but I’ve said I won’t stand in his way,” said Whelan of the 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international.

“We are waiting to see what happens at Everton, which is a difficult position to be in,” added Whelan.

Meanwhile, another Wigan team-mate Callum McManaman is wanted by Crystal Palace, however, a £2.5m bid was also rejected.
