Mix ‘n’ Match: Man City strikers dominate combined Spurs XI
Published:Manchester City play host to Tottenham in the most appetising of the Sunday afternoon Premier League offerings and, as part of the build up, we’ve fused together our own ‘super XI’ from across the two exceedingly pricey squads.
Firstly, do you agree with our choices? And secondly, will you be backing Man City as 4/6 favourites to win, being so strong at home or, does a 4/1-rated Spurs upset float your boat a little more?
As you can see from the balance of our choices below, we see it as a fairly evenly matched affair…..
A much-improved performance for England from Joe Hart isn’t enough to keep Hugo Lloris out of the net here, whether the Frenchman is concussed or not, so good is Spurs’ number one.
It’s a fairly even spread across the back four though. Pablo Zabaleta is deemed the most accomplished all-round right-back available, while Belgian duo Jan Vertonghen and Vincent Kompany are the most trustworthy central pairing.
Our choice at left-back may well be viewed as the most controversial, considering Danny Rose is behind Kieran Gibbs, Leighton Baines and Ashley Cole in the England pecking order.
However, neither Gael Clichy nor Aleksandar Kolarov have done enough in this campaign to convince and had Benoit Assou-Ekotto not been on loan at QPR, the Cameroonian would have got the nod.
The engine room is a straight split between the clubs. It was a close one to call between Sandro and Fernandinho, though the former just shades it, given his greater abilities in disarming the opposition.
Yaya Toure is un-droppable and the marauding Ivorian could arguably get into most world XI’s.
It’s in attack where City take centre-stage over goal-shy Spurs. In the last month or so we’ve witnessed a blossoming partnership between Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo, while Roberto Soldado has cut an isolated figure at White Hart Lane recently.
The supporting roles go to the most in-form wide men in either side at present, in David Silva and Andros Townsend, though Samir Nasri can be considered unlucky to miss out too.
