Newcastle identify Ligue 1 goalscorer as transfer target

Newcastle United’s habit of acquiring exciting young players from the French top flight could continue this January with the acquisition of forward Vincent Aboubakar.

The 21-year-old has been in sensational goalscoring form for Ligue 1 minnows Lorient and would no doubt be open to a move to the Premier League, with Tyneside a particularly appealing destination given the number of Gallic imports currently at the club.

A tally of 11 goals in 20 league appearances has seen the Cameroonian emerge as hot property in the January transfer window and the striker will be eager to follow in the footsteps of national heroes like Patrick Mboma, Joseph Desire-Job and Samuel Eto’o and seal a move to England.

Newcastle certainly appears to be the best club for the forward to make the transition to the big time, with 10 of the Magpies’ current first team squad boasting experience of playing in the French top flight.

And with manager Alan Pardew keen to add reinforcements to his squad and continue their push for a top six finish, Aboubakar could be the answer, with the Toon Army 28/1 to achieve that aim come the end of the campaign.

At present, those chances appear to hinge of the goalscoring exploits of loan signing Loic Remy with the forward registering 10 goals in 19 games to far this term.

Should the QPR-owned player suffer an injury or dip in form then the Magpies may be forced to settle for a place in the top 10, something offered at 1/33 with Ladbrokes.

But the arrival of Aboubakar could alleviate some of the pressure on the former Marseille man and add some much-needed competition to the squad, with Papiss Cisse and Shola Amoebi so far failing to keep up with Remy this term.

No fee has yet been mentioned for the Cameroon forward, but with Lorient currently languishing in mid-table, it may not be long before the youngster is agitating for a move to the bright lights of Premier League.
