Champions League winner can’t come soon enough for Spurs fans
Published:Before Tottenham played Norwich at Carrow Road there were mumbling’s that replacements for Tim Sherwood were being courted by the Spurs board.
The insipid 1-0 defeat that ensued will only accelerate the thought that the club’s former youth coach isn’t the man to guide the seniors to glory, as their odds to claim a place in next season’s Champions League slid to 5/1.
Having already sounded out one national manager for their head coach role, it seems the Lilywhites are keen to plunder that particular line of recruitment further, with Dutch boss Louis van Gaal dropping an elephant-sized hint that he could be on their radar.
Speaking at the Euro 2016 qualification draw, Van Gaal said his next challenge after the guiding the Oranje through the World Cup, a role he is 20/1 to end in crowning glory, could be in the Premier League.
Asked if that would be at Tottenham, the 62-year-old replied: “Maybe Tottenham are coming.”
It’s thought that the north London club’s original target to replace Sherwood, Cesare Prandelli, would be a significantly positive move for Spurs, but Van Gaal’s capture would supersede that by some distance.
A manager more decorated than Carol Smilie’s front room, Van Gaal has won league titles at every club he’s managed (Ajax, Barcelona, AZ and Bayern Munich) as well as a Champions League with the star-studded Amsterdam giants in 1995.
Having missed out on the chance to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when the former Manchester United man first aired thoughts of retirement in 2002, managing in England has remained on the Dutchman’s bucket list.
Renowned for instilling the purest attacking philosophies of Dutch footballing heritage, Van Gaal would be a welcome breath of fresh air for Spurs fans who first grew mightily frustrated with Andre Villas-Boas’ rigidity, before becoming exasperated at Sherwood’s lack of tactical nous in Norfolk.
