Rotherham’s win over Orient makes them a promotion pick

Whether you love him or hate him, after Saturday’s 2-1 victory over high-flying Leyton Orient, it’s difficult to ignore the fantastic job Steve Evans is doing at Rotherham, with the club well placed for promotion this term.

The Millers are currently a tempting 4/1 with Ladbrokes to go up this term either automatically or via the playoffs and on current form it would be difficult to dismiss their chances to playing Championship football next term.

A run of just four defeats in their last 19 games is impressive enough, but it’s their recent league form that has caught the eye in particular, with Evans’ side picking up 13 points from the last 15 available to put themselves well and truly in the promotion picture.

And while they remain a solid outfit when playing at the New York Stadium – with just two defeats from their last eleven League One fixtures played there – it’s away from home that they have impressed most.

Seven wins from their last nine on the road in the division is the kind of record usually associated with teams challenging for an automatic promotion place and though the Millers remain ten points off second-placed Wolves, there are still 17 league games to be played before the end of the season.

Kenny Jackett’s side are 1/4 second favourites for an immediate return to the English second tier, following four consecutive wins in League One, but prior to that run the Molineux club endured something of a wobble, picking up just two wins from ten games.

Given the collapse that the team endured in the Championship at the back end of last season, it’s not absurd to think that a repeat could yet occur, with Rotherham among those in the perfect position to capitalise.

And even if they fail to secure one of the top two spots, the Millers will fancy their chances in the playoffs, after putting in a dominant display against an Orient team they could face.

Provided they can finish third, then a relatively straightforward route to Wembley awaits with a potential semi-final against one of the inconsistent trio of Walsall, Peterborough or Swindon in the offing.

With Evans aiming to complete a spectacular hat-trick of back to back promotions, this could be one Marmite man to deliver something punters backing Rotherham to go up will most certainly love.
