Van Persie can put Man United hell behind him at World Cup
Published:Though the press seem more concerned with highlighting the number of passes Robin Van Persie is currently making to Wayne Rooney, the only statistic that matters for punters ahead of the World Cup is the number of goals he is scoring.
A haul of 30 goals in 48 games for the Red Devils last term was enough to fire United to another league title and marked the fifth consecutive season in which the striker has reached double figures for goals.
The Reds may currently be enjoying a torrid time under David Moyes but Van Persie has continued to impress, despite being sidelined with a series of minor injuries, racking up 12 goals in his 18 appearances.
He’s certainly been back among the goals since his most recent return from a spell on the sidelines, scoring in United’s two most recent Premier League fixtures.
And Van Persie, more than anyone, will be determined to make an impact in Brazil, following a disappointing series of performances at Euro 2012, with the Dutchman bang in form going into the tournament but ultimately failing to find the net as Holland crashed out at the group stage.
However, since then the 30-year-old has been a regular scorer for the national side, registering eight goals in just seven games for the Netherlands in 2013 during a qualification campaign in which Louis Van Gaal’s team progressed with ease.
And while United may be floundering in the league, Holland’s all-time top scorer Van Persie could be flying come June having found the net in the previous two World Cup tournaments.
Spain may represent a tough prospect but with matches against Australia and a defensively porous Chile could mean it’s a tournament to remember for those backing the Red Devils forward.
