Liverpool’s captain marvel boosted to open scoring at Anfield

Manchester City’s crushing derby victory over their crestfallen neighbours has ramped up the pressure on Liverpool to keep pace in the title race when they entertain Sunderland in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Anfield.

Luckily for the Reds, though, they couldn’t be facing much more obliging visitors to further facilitate their title tilt than Gus Poyet’s backpedalling Black Cats.

Liverpool’s odds of 1/6 to take the points, compared to a whopping 14/1 on the visitors, tells you all you need to know about how this contest is expected to go down.

Ensconced in a relegation battle and already beaten 3-1 in the reverse fixture, Sunderland have the look of lambs to the slaughter against a rampant Liverpool outfit who have scored 24 goals across their last six Premier League outings.

One of those Reds responsible for such prolific scoring rates is their captain fantastic, Steven Gerrard, whose odds to score the game’s first goal have been shunted out from 6/1 to 7s for this televised clash.

This really looks a top bet to accompany that slice of pizza and non-brand-specific lager for a Wednsday night, when you consider the Liverpool stalwart’s recent spree of goals which has taken him to double figures yet again in the top flight.

Not only did Gerrard score the first goal of the game at Old Trafford recently on his way to a brace of penalties, but the England skipper has notched five from his last seven in all competitions for his club.

And it’s being the designated penalty taker which adds further credence to Gerrard’s chances of kicking off another raucous night of goal plundering action at Anfield.

Alternatively, usual suspects Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are priced at 5/2 and 3/1 respectively to light the game’s blue touch paper and notch first.
