Now’s the time to take on Williams’ Wimbledon betting dominance
Published:Only once in the last eight years has Serena Williams had such a poor start to the Grand Slam season as she’s suffered in 2014.
Two years ago, the American followed up a fourth round exit at the Australian Open with a shock fall at the first hurdle at Roland Garros.
Although the 17-time Grand Slam winner ended that slump by winning that year’s Wimbledon and US Open, there’s never been a better time to back against lightening striking twice.
Williams is the 5/4 favourite to claim the SW19 trophy for sixth time, but has started off the Grand Slams with another fourth-round loss in the Aussie Open and a second-stage upset at the French.
The precedent suggests she’ll bounce back with authority and her record at the All England club, where she’s lost just nine times in 16 appearances, means she can’t be ousted as the market leader.
Recent form means opposing the 32-year-old has never been a more ripe opportunity though and consistent Wimbledon performer Petra Kvitova should be Ladbrokes customers’ chosen vehicle with which to do so at juicy odds.
In her last four tournaments Williams has only passed the quarter-finals once and the Russian is one of the three players to beat her in that time.
Champion of the English summer slam in 2011, the 24-year-old has reached at least the last-eight stage of Wimbledon in all of her previous four appearances there.
With an appearance at the Aegon International helping her adjust from clay to grass, something Williams avoids, Kvitova will be well prepared for another deep run in the tournament too.
At 12/1 to win her second SW19 title, a price that makes Kvitova the tournament’s fourth favourite, there really isn’t any reason not to oppose Williams’ dominance with such unusual confidence.
