Former boss thinks Arsenal still need 3 signings, we name them
Published:Despite spending the longest amount of time at the top of the Premier League table last season, Arsenal finished the campaign in fourth for the sixth time in the last nine seasons.
A propensity to get pummelled by the sides in and around them away from home and a thin squad that couldn’t cope with injuries were large reasons for the side’s inability to cling on to top spot.
This summer Arsene Wenger has made considerable moves to attend to the latter issue, with Alexis Sanchez the marquee arrival in a quartet of new signings for the 13/2 title shots.
Their former manager, George Graham, still reckons three buys are required to solidify the Gunners’ title chances. We’ve taken a stab at who he might mean:
Sami Khedira – Real Madrid
The signings of Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina all address the need to strengthen areas of weakness for Wenger. All that’s left is defensive midfield.
Should Khedira’s long-linked switch to the Emirates go through, the German would seriously boost Arsenal’s defence-screening options, with one or both of Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta as backup.
Fabio Coentrao – Real Madrid
Although it’s never really been mooted, bringing in another Los Blanco, in the form of Portuguese left-back Coentrao, to rival Kieran Gibbs would be a feather in Arsenal’s cap.
Gibbs is by no means pony at full-back, but strength in depth wins you titles and a partnership with Coentrao far outranks a Gibbs/Nacho Monreal tandem.
Loic Remy – QPR
Keeping with the strength in depth theme, Arsenal need a four-pronged strikeforce to call on if they want to win the title.
Manchester United pioneered the theory, their noisy neighbours followed suit and Arsenal have been left behind.
Adding Loic Remy to the existing trio of Olivier Giroud, Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell would seriously enhance the Gunners’ title chances.
