Silva 16/1 to claim Player of the Year after new Man City contract

Published:

It’s been a summer of evolution rather than revolution at Manchester City, with perhaps just Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando of their signings likely to be first-team regulars this season.

Understandably enough, Manuel Pellegrini is largely content with his squad of Premier League champions, and the most significant bit of City business could be getting David Silva to sign a new five-year contract.

The Spanish playmaker will undoubtedly be key to the Citizens’ chances of retaining their title next season, and Ladbrokes has priced up his chances of winning the PFA Player of the Season at 16/1.

Silva made the shortlist for the award when City won the title in 2011/12, but had to settle for a place in the Team of the Year as Robin van Persie blasted his way to the individual award.

In that season the magical midfielder made 15 assists, the most managed by any player in each of the past five Premier League campiagns.

Silva suffered with injuries last term, but still managed to contribute seven goals and nine assists in 27 league appearances as City won the title.

When Silva is fit, perhaps only Yaya Toure is more of an influence on the Citizens’ side and if they do make good on their 15/8 odds to win the league, the Spaniard will almost certainly be in the running for the top player award.

Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona will only aid his cause, as with the Uruguayan following Gareth Bale to Spain, the league can be said to lack one standout superstar.

The 28-year-old endured a disappointing summer as part of the Spain squad that made such a hash of their attempts to retain the World Cup in Brazil, but his recent domestic experiences have been far more enjoyable.

The Capital One Cup and Premier League were added to his medal haul last season and Silva is a good bet to celebrate his new deal with an individual award this time around.
