Tying down striker Man City’s best business of the summer

| 21.08.2014

It’s shaping up to be a fine summer for Premier League champions Manchester City following some shrewd additions, though re-signing one of their own is probably Manuel Pellegrini’s finest move.

After Sergio Aguero nailed his colours to the City mast for another five years at the beginning of the season, Edin Dzeko has put pen to parchment on his own four-year deal

To think that Dzeko – contributor of 16 league goals to the title-winning cause last season – has so often been linked with moves away from Manchester in virtually every transfer window since his 2011 capture, is utterly ludicrous.

While Aguero is perceived to be the star of the City striking ranks, Dzeko has not only supplied particularly healthy goal returns, but he’s arguably a better all-round team player.

The Bosnian target man even outscored his illustrious striker partner during the 2012/13 season.

Then again, it’s hardly surprising Dzeko has flourished in England given his record of netting 66 Bundesliga goals in only 111 Wolfsburg appearances, becoming the highest league scorer in their history in the process, before joining the Citizens.

Dzeko doesn’t possess the lightning pace of Aguero or Stevan Jovetic, but his movement in the box is so intelligent, he always earns himself chances to find the onion bag.

Crucially, his time on the physio table is far more limited than any of the quartet of centre-forwards Pellegrini has to call upon, who have all suffered long-term injuries at some point in their City careers.

With Jovetic back in business after a successful pre-season and Aguero off to a scoring start in the league, it will be intriguing to see who lines up against Liverpool next – where Dzeko’s an 11/8 chance to bag any time.
