Newcastle complete relegation reform with sixth win on the spin

Four days into October, Newcastle hadn’t won a Premier League game and were only off the bottom of the table on goal difference.
How Alan Pardew had managed to keep hold of his job amid such a run, and in the face of a hate campaign to rival anything on the X Factor, was bemusing the nation and the club looked set for a season fighting the drop.
Six games, five of which have been in the top flight, and over a month later, the Magpies can’t stop winning. Their 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers was their fourth clean sheet in a row and the club once derided so viciously across the land currently sit in fifth.
Their relegation odds, once as skinny as a health-conscious coffee, are now bloated to a sizeable 40/1 and while it feels that this miraculous run must be extended further to make an impression on the top-four market, they currently sit level on points with fourth-place holders Manchester United.
Ladbrokes offer the same 40/1 price on Pardew’s side breaking into the Champions League places come May and when you consider the side’s current list of scalps in this six-game streak, it becomes a tempting proposition.
Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City – in the Capital One Cup – have all been brushed aside by the men in black and white and with the league seemingly as tight and unpredictable as it ever has been, a Geordie European tour seems quite plausible considering Southampton are currently the second best team in the country.
The run is a considerable pat on the back for Mike Ashley too, often criticised as an owner who cares as much about Newcastle as Scrooge loves Christmas, but had the faith and patience to allow his manager to turn a dire run of form around.
Pardew, it must be remembered, is a football boss who took this side to the verge of Champions League football just three seasons ago and looks set to battle at the right end of the table once again.
