Sack Race: QPR’s Redknapp still favourite for the chop

Gus Poyet earned himself some breathing space in the Premier League sack race but still hovers around the head of the market.
The Black Cats boss stands as a 5/1 shot to be the next Premier League boss to leave his post but after guiding his side to an away win over Crystal Palace the dropping of the axe has been put off – for now at least.
Some punters may be tempted by the 50/1 that says Louis van Gaal is next to go after defeat at City consigned Manchester United to their worst start to a league campaign since 1986 but the Dutchman looks likely to spend his way out of trouble in January.
And so it remains that Harry Redknapp continues to look the value bet, even at the short price of 11/8.
Rs fans will point out that while the west London side’s recent woes include losses to the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton – teams they were either not expecting to beat or playing well above expectations – and that there is still time for Redknapp to turn things around.
The Loftus Road gaffer certainly has the backing of the club’s owner Tony Fernandes – in public at least – but the former Tottenham boss increasingly has the look of a man that knows the writing is on the wall.
And with Manchester City and a suddenly in-form Newcastle next up for the Hoops life doesn’t look like it’s getting better any time soon.
As this weekly article has mentioned before, the presence of both Glenn Hoddle and Les Ferdinand at the club seems to put Redknapp in an uncomfortable position and while Fernandes may not drop the axe, the manger could always walk away of his own accord.
By his own admission, Redknapp would have walked away from the game but for Bobby Zamora’s last-minute heroics in last year’s play-off final, and while the lure of the top flight enticed him to stay for another year at least, the 67-year-old has found the Premier League return harder than he may have imaged.
Paul Lambert could still tempt at 6/1 and Steve Bruce’s known lack of commitment makes the 7/1 on him an interesting option, but for now Redknapp remains the choice bet in this market.
