Spurs eyeing up Colombian star to boost strikeforce
Published:Despite Harry Kane’s recent heroics, all is far from well with Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking unit, and Mauricio Pochettino is apparently considering an overhaul of his strikeforce in January.
Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Patrick Herrmann and River Plate’s Teofilo Gutierrez are all apparently being considered.
The latter, who impressed with a Radamel Falcao-less Colombia at the World Cup, might be available for just £6m from River Plate.
The table-topping Argentine side would surely be loathe to let him go, as Gutierrez is the Primera Liga’s top scorer with 10 goals in 11 games this season.
However, the 29-year-old is not only an out-and-out goal-getter, as shown by the admirable support work he does for Falcao when playing alongside the Manchester United forward for Colombia.
Gutierrez has only bagged 13 times in 36 games for Los Cafeteros, and further concern for Spurs fans might come from his poor record in his one previous stint in Europe.
The striker struggled to settle at Turkish side Trabzonspor, scoring just eight times in 24 appearances, and quickly left for Argentine side Racing Club.
However, now a more experienced player, Spurs might fancy that Gutierrez could add some experience and intensity to their front line.
While Kane has hit his straps this term, Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor have been awful, and both could be shipped out at the end of the season.
An experienced, adaptable player with a strong recent goal-record and a relatively low price-tag, Gutierrez could be a strong squad option for Spurs if they do move for him in January.
The Lilywhites next match is away at Greek side Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League, a game they are 3/4 to win.
